Missions, both local and global, are an
important part of First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Algona.
Each year our church is
a "Five for Five" contributor to missions of the United Church of
Christ. We contribute to Our Church's Wider Mission, One Great
Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, Strengthen the Church, and the
Christmas Fund for Veterans of the Cross. We also hold regular collections
for various local mission projects.
Among our other missions projects are:
- For more than
thirty years our church has administered the Mahana Scholarship Trust, which has
given over a million dollars to help area students with their college
education. The Sefirt scholarship was also provided by a member of
our church.

- On the first Sunday of each month we encourage
members to bring non-perishable food or cash donations for the Kossuth
County Food Pantry.

- We deliver lunches to shut-ins as part of
the Meals on Wheels program.
- We have helped out
when people need help with farming and gardening.

We sponsor an
annual fundraiser meal to benefit the Kossuth County CARE Team.
- We sponsor a
mitten tree at Christmas and collect mittens and towels in winter to
help needy families in the area.
- Members of our church participate in the annual
CROP Walk to fight hunger each fall.

- We sponsor a
"mobile mission" that provides slushes and cotton candy for children
at community events.
-
-
- For the past several years our church has helped a
Native American family on the Omaha Reservation each Christmas. The
family thanked us with a beautiful handmade quilt that hangs in our church
parlor.

- Our church actively participates in
the Kossuth County Ministerial Association, where local churches work
together to help those in need in our community.
